With last year's player of the tournament absent due to national commitments, and two others who're among the highest-paid stars also missing, Australia's contingent at the start of the second IPL season will be more notable for who's not playing than those who make the trip to South Africa

There'll still be retired spin bowling great Shane Warne leading the way as captain and coach of the defending champion Rajasthan Royals, but Warne will be missing a key ingredient from last year, player of the inaugural Indian Premier League Twenty20 season Shane Watson.

The 26-year-old Watson, who scored 472 runs at an average of 42 in the IPL last year, has returned from injury and was named in the Australian limited-overs squad for a series against Pakistan in Dubai and Abu Dhabi beginning next Wednesday _ four days after the IPL starts.

Also missing will be troubled allrounder Andrew Symonds, who was been out of the Australian lineup for several months until his recall for the Pakistan series, and fast bowler Brett Lee, who was initially named in squad to play Pakistan but was later ruled out and replaced by Doug Bollinger.

Lee, at least, will continue to train in South Africa with his Indian Premier League franchise, Kings XI Punjab, to further his rehabilitation from ankle and foot operations. But if he's cleared to play, it's expected that will be for Australia before he sees any action for his IPL franchise.

Symonds would have been the fourth-highest salary earner at $1.35 million with Deccan Chargers in the IPL this season (behind England's Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff and India's Mahendra Singh Dhoni).

Lee was set to make $900,000, which would have put him at No. 10 in the 2009 earnings list.

Salaries are paid on a pro-rata basis for the foreign stars, so the more matches they play, the more they earn. The Australians on national team duties will get a chance to return to the IPL later in the tournament.

Also among the absent Australians is test skipper Ricky Ponting, who is being rested to prepare for the Ashes campaign against England in two months.

Australian Michael Hussey will also not play in this year's IPL in order to rest for the Ashes. Hussey would have been available for only the final two weeks of the IPL, which ends with the final on May 24 in Johannesburg.

Michael Clarke, who will captain Australia in Ponting's absence against Pakistan _ that series ends May 7 _ and pace bowler Mitchell Johnson, will also miss this year's IPL. Clarke and Johnson did not play in the inaugural IPL and did not nominate for the player auction earlier this year.

The Grand IPL Carnivals began in Cape Town, South Africa yesterday with much fanfare. All IPL Twenty20 cricketers, owners and officials including IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi took part in a road show, to the tunes of music, drum beating and dancers. The teams travelled through the roads in open roof vehicles. Thousands of people gathered on the streets of Cape Town to greet the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2009 carnival, which is being held in South Africa for the first time.

Both cricketers and cricket fans are upbeat about the IPL 2, which will commence in South Africa on April 18. The euphoria among the cricket fans in India is not missing despite the ongoing general elections and shifting of the tournament to South Africa.

According to Lalit Modi, South African economy may get up to two billion rands from IPL 2. About 40,000 hotel rooms have already been booked in eight cities of South Africa that will host the tournament.

This time, the IPL matches will be 15 minutes longer, as there will be a seven-minute pause in play at the halfway stage of every 20-over innings. A break after every 10 overs, will allow the teams to discuss their strategy. The crowd will be entertained by a live band, while the TV viewers will watch separate set of commercials during the break.

The Indian Premier League will return to India next year, but the long-term vision is to turn it into a global brand, in much the same way as the English Football Premier League.

Spectators will see the world's best players playing competitive cricket, and it's made more compelling because of the competitive instincts of the players.

The heat is on campaign with thousands of street pole posters in major cities across the country and three full-page ads in single editions of every national and regional daily and weekly newspaper is arguably the largest media spend by any sporting authority in the country's history, and is aimed at providing a taste of India to local spectators.

Warne - Smith - IPL Hitters

AUSTRALIA'S impact on this month's Indian Premier League is sure to be huge despite so many IPL-contracted players being chosen for the one-day international series against Pakistan.

Seven IPL-contracted stars have been selected in Australia's 14-man squad for the series starting in Dubai on April 22 after the one-day series against South Africa ends on Friday.

The list includes some of the IPL's biggest drawcards such as last year's leading runscorer Shaun Marsh, player of the tournament Shane Watson, Andrew Symonds, Nathan Bracken, James Hopes, David Hussey and Brett Lee.

But Brad Hodge and David Warner, along with retired greats Shane Warne, Adam Gilchrist, Matt Hayden and Glenn McGrath, will be available for the entire IPL, which starts in Cape Town on Saturday.

And with the Warne-led Rajasthan Royals defending their IPL title in the five-week tournament, the 39-year-old spin king is hoping to win over the South African fans with Proteas captain Graeme Smith standing alongside him.

Warne said he has special memories of playing in South Africa.

"I've been back a few times to play in poker tournaments at Sun City," he said. "I've always enjoyed playing here.

"The public have booed me most of the time but hopefully playing with the Rajasthan Royals they'll get behind me.

"Hopefully when I come on to bowl I'll get a clap, or a cheer or whistle. They're pretty vocal over here. They love their cricket.

"Having Graeme Smith and Morne Morkel in the side will help.

"It has surprised me how many people watched the IPL over here and how many people liked the Royals."

Warne, who had a war of words with Smith in 2005-06, has nicknamed the opener "Rock at the top".

His late-blooming friendship with the feisty South African skipper has been one of the success stories of the IPL.

"We had a few beers after the first game (of the 2008 IPL season) and chatted about a lot of stuff," Warne said.

"We hung out a fair bit. We've kept in touch since then and become good buddies.

"They (South Africa) have done well. He's matured a bit too. He came in at a young age and wanted to try to mix it.

"He didn't want to take a backward step. He was so verbal and public about everything.

"We won 5-0 (in 2005-06) and I said to him the other day, 'When something's not working, try to do something else. Don't just continue and let the ego get in the way'.

"He said, 'Yeah yeah, I've learnt my lesson'.

"He learnt a lot about himself and how things work. He has matured into a good captain."

Smith has said he is relaxed about playing under the former Australian Test vice-captain and he's "happy to be in the background" in the IPL.

Like Warne, Smith has copped plenty of stick from South African crowds, but batting in the Sydney Test in January despite a broken finger won him new fans.

"When I came home, the reception I got . . . that was something special," Smith told SA Cricket magazine.

"I've had to come to terms with the fact that with me, there's no balanced view. People either love me or hate me."

The IPL will inform the Gauteng Cricket Board tomorrow about the status of suite-holders at Wanderers, but CEO Alan Kourie is optimistic a compromise could be made to accommodate suite-holders: "I'm upbeat," he said. "We put forward our recommendations and we don't think we are that far apart."

Nevertheless any compromise could involve a great deal of sacrifice for suite-holders many of whom, in the case of the Wanderers, have owned suites for a decade or more. The Wanderers is due to host eight matches, a semifinal and the tournament's final on May 24.

It is believed the IPL in signing the deal with Cricket SA that brought the tournament to this country, asked for clean stadia, in order to put up their own advertising and that all suites be handed over to them. Suite-holders were to be compensated by being given tickets in the grandstand and a meal.

On Thursday the WP Cricket Association effectively apologised to suite-holders at Newlands for the fact that they would not have first rights on the use of their hospitality boxes for the IPL. "In all our negotiations with the IPL, WPCA has ensured the interests of our suite-holders are paramount. From the IPL side, they have insisted that, as a non-negotiable requirement for the hosting of the eight matches in Cape Town, they require access to all our suites," the WPCA said in a statement.

The EP Cricket Board were due to meet the IPL yesterday over the use of hospitality suites at St George's Park.

It emerged on Friday that some suite-holders at Newlands and the Wanderers were willing to play hardball and, if not allowed into the stadium during the IPL, would lock up their suites. Many suites are decorated with valuable memorabilia while virtually all contain bar and catering facilites. It is understood that the IPL have charged suite-holders R9 000 per person for use of a suite during matches.

In negotiations with the unions the IPL have apprently threatened to have matches moved to smaller venues and in the case of the Wanderers move the final to SuperSport Park in Centurion. However, such a threat seems to be a thinly veiled one particularly for Newlands, which is already sold out all for the double-header opening next weekend. If the four matches had to be moved now, that would cause a logistical nightmare for a tournament already beset by problems after the hasty decision to move it here.

In a flimsy statement released late on Thursday, Cricket SA sought to allay fears and said negotiations were underway to solve the problems.

Meanwhile, a major media standoff that saw the world's foremost news agencies, including AP, AFP and Reuters, boycott last year's inaugural IPL over restrictions placed on them has ended in an amicable and significant solution.

Following representations from concerned SA media houses on Thursday, the IPL agreed to revise its media terms and conditions for the current event - and effectively gave the green light for news and photographs to be filed to cricket websites that may compete with the official one.

Flintoff - Heating Up IPL 2009

After having missed a good amount of cricket last year owing to injuries, England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff said that he didn't want to miss the game any more and is eager to play in the Indian Premier League. Flintoff, who was bought by Chennai Super Kings for a record $1.55 million, has had several niggling injuries, the latest of which was a hip problem that ruled him out of the final Test and first two One-day Internationals in the West Indies. "I've not played a lot of Twenty20 cricket and I'd like to play more. I'm not saying the money is not very appealing, but there's a lot more to it. I spent several weeks working very hard at my fitness when I came back from the West Indies and, hopefully, that will stand me in good stead come the summer," he said.
